Opening exhibit – Bill Cummins

Bill Cummins
“Diversity, Perversity & Perplexity”

An amazing and enlightening retrospective on artist Bill (William) Cummins. Cummins grew up in NYC where he became interested in cartooning. His career started in commercial art where he worked in production, design, and illustration. He now lives in Old Colorado City and has continued his passion for art, working on art daily.

This show is a collection of a lifetime of work. The work will move you, make you smile, make you contemplate life, it will shock – it is diverse, perverse and perplex just like the artist himself.

Join us for the opening exhibit on Friday, January 11th from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.Image

Question and Answer with Artist Megan McCluskey

As an artist what inspires you?
Anything strikingly beautiful or bold or ironic inspires me.
What do you want the viewer to know about your work?
I want the viewer to know that the reason I made the art is for enjoyment and excitement, to add flavor to life.
What is most misunderstood about your prints?
The creative process is difficult to understand, but it is important to know that each print is the result of paper and ink and stencil going through the press just one time together. What comes out the other end is a phenomenon of what happens to each under pressure, despite my meticulous placement of the paper and ink and stencils beforehand.
Your process is different from most monotype artists, how so?
I only use paper and ink. The stencils are made of paper and it is really the stenciled image that impresses the eye. The better the stencil, the better the final print. Also, my work is embossed which makes it unique.

What do you like most about your artwork?
I like the colors and the knowledge that the elements I used to make a beautiful work of art were at first the funkiest shapes I could find.
What’s the last artwork you purchased?
A handmade copper belt buckle with colored enameled highlights running through the middle. It was my husband’s birthday gift.

What artwork do you wish you had?
There’s a ton of stuff on Etsy I wish I owned. I really like paper arts like origami and book art. And jewelry is just wearable art so of course anything handmade and heavy or bright is on my favorites list.

What would you do to get it?
Well since it’s Christmastime I think I’ll ask Santa.
What is the most indispensable item in your studio?
A razor blade. There’s nothing that cleans up ink in a more satisfying way.

What’s the last good book you read?
Ummmm the Heirs of Cahira O’Connor series. I’m a sucker for period novels about women that have only a hint of historical accuracy, if any.
